Kortrijk, Belgium, 26 February 2008. Barco, a market leader in LED display technology, is delighted to announce two new additions to its range of indoor LED displays. The NX-6 is a 6mm true black LED display, while the ILite 6 BK increases the contrast ratio of the widely-used ILite platform. As a result, Barco now has a full indoor LED line up designed to serve the needs of every part of the rental and staging market.

Shown for the first time at its Annual European Rental Partner meeting, currently being held in the Mediterranean islands of Malta, the NX-6 is a brand new 6mm indoor LED display based on the same revolutionary black LED platform as its 4mm sister, the NX-4. The NX series deliver the deepest black levels of any product on the market. Combined with a light output of 2,000 Nit, the NX series offers a phenomenal contrast ratio of 4000:1 for the NX-4 and 4200:1 for the NX-6.

But the black LED is only one element that makes the NX series unique. Key advances in base materials, mechanical design and color processing have raised the bar of LED displays to new heights of image quality. Thanks to the magnet fixation, the separate control box and the click locking mechanics, Barco’s NX LED displays offer high creativity possibilities combined with a fast and easy set up and front serviceability.

Also been shown for the very first time in Malta, is the ILite 6 BK, a new 6mm black LED display based on the well established ILite technology. Thanks to the black LED and the newly redesigned shaders, the ILite 6 BK features a contrast ratio of 3000:1 with a 2000 Nit brightness output. Barco’s ILite 6 BK is compatible with the full range of existing ILite peripherals and sources. It is highly reliable and gives the best visual performance for a minimum investment, hereby ensuring a maximum return on investment.

“We are pleased to present our customers with a full indoor LED display line-up,” says Andrew Healey Global Marketing Manager (Events) of Barco’s Media and Entertainment division. “We now have an LED display solution to match the needs of every rental partner and for any type of budget. If customers are looking for the ultimate in contrast, seamlessness and creativity, they will opt for the NX-series of displays. For customers who are looking to add LED to their fleet for the first time, the ILite family is an excellent choice. Thanks to our improved calibration technology, all our LED displays also have excellent color uniformity, making them highly suitable for cross renting.”

I-Mag Video joins forces with Country Music Television, Inc. (CMT) and Camouflage Films to stage the 2007 CMT Music Awards, using a creative array of Barco LED, projection and MiTRIX modules.

Sacramento, CA — May 14,2007 — Barco, a leading manufacturer in display technology, announces that Nashville-based I-Mag Video selected a full complement of Barco LED and projection gear for the 16 April nationwide broadcast of the 2007 CMT Music Awards. Originating from Nashville’s Curb Event Center on the campus of Belmont University, the show was simulcast in both SD and HD, using MTV’s new “Pegasus” mobile HD production truck.

In conjunction with CMT, the show was produced by Audrey Morrissey from Camouflage Films, and the set was designed by Anton Goss, from Consortium Studios in Venice, California. Using multiple video elements across the stage and the thrust, the set required a complex array of front and rear projection, movable “slivers” of video, large format video walls and decorative LED trim. To realize Goss’ concept, I-Mag supplied eight movable columns of Barco D7 tiles, two movable D7 headers, one large Barco OLite 510 wall, three OLite 510 towers and two 18×24 projection screens — using double-stacked Barco FLM R20+ large venue projectors. To cap the design, Barco’s new MiTRIX modules were used as the front fascia for the stairs and as a decorative “handrail” that framed the performers at the end of the thrust.

Tony Macre, Director of Engineering for I-Mag, commented on the installation. “This is the third year we’ve worked on the CMT awards, and there’s a lot more video on this show than ever before,” said Macre. “The Barco products are very user-friendly as far as processing goes, and especially the way we can easily map images into the video columns that Anton created. Overall, we’re very proud to be working with CMT and the designers on this broadcast.”

With a background in rock-and-roll, game shows and awards shows, Anton Goss’ recent credits include sets for Tyra Banks, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, and Deal or No Deal. “In this small college arena, I had to create a big stage presence, and a quick walk-on from the audience in order to keep up the energy,” said Goss. “And that’s the impetus for the ‘video’ stairs with MiTRIX, and the MiTRIX zipper that encapsulates the presenters. It’s very cool, and I particularly like the low-rez, transparent nature of it. There may even be a tag line that says it all — country tech.”

Audrey Morrissey, the 2007 CMT Music Awards’ producer, worked at MTV for nine years on big event specials and award shows, prior to forming Camouflage Films. “This year, the freshest note it that we’ve added more video, and Anton is largely responsible for that,” noted Morrissey. “We love the fact that specific video screens will only take slivers of a frame, to make it much more abstract. Yes, it’s exponentially more complicated than in years past, but with I-Mag’s help and all the talented crew, we’re proud of the fact that we’ve brought a distinct style and energy to this broadcast.”

“Once again, I-MAG Video has designed a superb technical solution to a remarkable set design,” said Steve Scorse, Vice President of Sales for Barco’s Media and Entertainment division, “and we’re very pleased that they continue to select Barco projection and LED products. Whether it’s for the CMT Awards or Rascal Flatts’ national tour, their engineering expertise continues to generate excitement for the every audience.”

If you missed the broadcast and would like a “webcast” view of Anton Goss’ set and the Barco products mentioned above, please visit www.cmt.com.

EPSON EMP news

Good news for the video projector lovers, especially those who need it for professional use as those 2 products were made for this and not cinema/entertainment.

Both versions will go on sale early June (in Japan) at a starting price around 90.000 yen for the EMP-X5 (760 USD/555 Euro) and up to 207.900 yen (1750USD/ 1285 Euro) for the EMP-822.

The EMP-X5 features 2200 lumens and a 1024×768 (Real XGA) resolution, just like the 822 but with 2600 lumens this time. The weight is similar (2.7/2.9Kg), contrast is identical (400:1) and they share the 3LCD technology.

The interesting thing here comes from various options such as the “Direct Shut Down” and “Quick Start Up” or “One Touch and Off” which speak for themselves…no need to wait for the lamp to cool down here and it is really enjoyable especially when you need to move or transport your projector !
So as to make the EMP-888 a little bit more exclusive it comes equipped with a remote and a wireless mouse (mouse for the 3.000 first buyers only).

All in all, an excellent product made by EPSON for presentations and conferences.

Barco converts La Géode into Europe’s largest digital 3D dome
Paris, France – Barco, a leading global provider of visual display solutions, has recently brought digital 3D projection to the La Géode giant dome in Paris. La Géode is one of the largest geodesic domes in the world and the Barco installation makes this exhibit the largest 3D digital presentation ever to be displayed on a spherical surface. The grand opening was held on 6 March and inaugurated by Renaud Donnedieu de Vabre, French Minister of Culture and Communication.

“This solution allows La Geode to introduce the biggest, brightest, and finest high-definition 3D and 2D digital image covering a very large part of its 1,000 m2 hemispheric screen,” says Laurent Dondey, general manager at La Géode. “This project started with a visit at ‘IMAX Tycho Brahe’ – the dome movie theater and planetarium in Copenhagen – where we were very impressed and inspired by the courageous and successful first move made by Steen Iversen’s team and Barco’s Eric Braux in implementing giant digital projection for 3D programs. We discovered the right way to strategically enrich, diversify, and render less dependant our programming.”

Ever since the implementation of the Barco system solution at the Tycho Brahe planetarium in Copenhagen, there appears to be a strong interest in digital 3D among museums and themed parks with giant screen domes. Barco’s 3D digital display system enables La Géode to diversify its offering and provide a new experience to its patrons, as well as differentiate its offer from standard theaters. La Géode will split its screen time between digital and large format film presentations.

La Géode plans to show 3D programs three to four times a day, high-definition (HD) children animation programs, documentaries for special rendezvous of La Géode, music and video concerts, satellite video transmissions for sports and cultural/musical events, and sessions for graphic and new digital image creators with schools and labs.

“This project was a true and thrilling challenge which drew much passion and effort from the La Géode team, as well as attention from the industry,” adds Laurent Dondey. “In a few weeks, we believe we’ll attract many new visitors in addition to the current stream of 550,000 IMAX spectators. Barco is sharing our enthusiasm and excitement and even providing artistic direction, advice, and contact bridging for the show and the programs to come — a help we much appreciate.”

As prime contractor for the La Géode project, Barco was responsible for the entire implementation of the giant digital display system. In the early phases of the project, Barco played a major role in consulting La Géode to validate the technical feasibility and business model. The world-renown dome theater relied on Barco’s extensive expertise in large-scale, multi-channel visualization for spherical surfaces, high-definition, and stereoscopic imaging.

The La Géode system solution consists of a multi-channel, Barco Galaxy passive Infitec stereo display system, the new Barco XDS-1000 external desktop system, and a collection of high-resolution sources including video servers, satellite feeds, and other high-definition inputs. Barco’s scalable XDS-1000 allows the projection system to simultaneously display up to 16 video sources to HD resolution in multiple windows, as well as display multiple stereo sources. The digital video serving technology allows the system to playback various digital content in a wide range of formats and record in high definition in real time.
