LG.Philips LCD to Showcase Next-Generation Display Technologies at SID 2007

LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd. [NYSE: LPL, KRX: 034220], one of the world’s leading innovators of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, announced today that it will showcase its industry-leading technologies, including AMOLED products, flexible color displays, a multi-touch LCD screen, highly advanced LCD TV panels and more during SID (Society for Information Display) 2007, to be held from May 20 through 25 in Long Beach, California.

Next Generation Display Technologies
LG.Philips LCD will be demonstrating a number of highly advanced displays that represent the future of the industry. A hair-thin flexible AMOLED display can reproduce a full 16.7 million colors and is one of the most advanced displays ever created. The world’s first 14.1-inch flexible color A4-size E-paper display is just as easy to read as a laser printout. These, along with a 6-inch E-paper display which the company will exhibit, could replace a number of current paper products because of their crisp output and low power consumption.

Another advancement showcased at this exhibition is a 47-inch multi-touch screen that recognizes different points of contact in relation to each other. This allows users to actually manipulate data or images with their hands, much like in science fiction movies.

LG.Philips LCD is at the forefront making environmentally-friendly display products. The company will demonstrate a 42-inch panel with Intelligent Power Control technology, which reduces average power consumption by 30 percent. Another cutting-edge 42-inch screen includes a built-in LCD picture improvement chip, allowing TV set manufacturers to create TVs with extremely high picture quality with ease. On a smaller scale, LG.Philips LCD will show off a 2.0-inch mobile phone panel designed to reduce power consumption and enhance dynamic contrast ratio.

Full HD LCD TV Panels in the Spotlight
LG.Philips LCD will showcase its complete line-up of Full HD LCD panels for LCD HDTVs, including its 52-, 47-, 42- and 37-inch wide displays. These displays all have Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080, an omni-directional viewing angle of 180 degrees, a brightness of 500 cd/m2, a dynamic contrast ratio of up to 10,000:1 and an impressive color gamut of 92 percent. These, along with a variety of other large and wide LCD HDTV panels on display, feature technological enhancements such as motion blur reduction through 100Hz/120 Hz refresh rate technology and copper bus implementation.

Larger, Brighter, Wider Panels for Monitors and Notebooks
LG.Philips LCD will demonstrate a number of its high-quality LCD panels for notebook and desktop computer monitors, focusing on premium widescreen models. Among the desktop monitor panels shown will be the world’s largest monitor panel, measuring 30 inches diagonally, as well as a 26-inch model that boasts the world’s best performance numbers. The world’s thinnest 24-inch widescreen monitor panel will also be on display.

Just as dedicated to mobile solutions, LG.Philips LCD will allow visitors to see its 20.1-inch widescreen notebook panel, another world’s largest. Also of note is a 4.8-inch touch screen for ultra-mobile personal computers.

Full Line Up of Applications
This year, LG.Philips LCD has greatly expanded the selection of small and medium-size displays it is exhibiting. They range from very small displays for use in mobile phones to ultra-high resolution displays for use in medical devices.

The company’s medium-size displays will include 7- and 8-inch displays for automotive use, including 1,000 nit high brightness displays and Dual Screen with One Panel (DSOP) displays that allow drivers to see one image and passengers to see another one on a single screen. Another featured product category will be panels for portable navigation systems ranging in size from 3.5 to 7 inches. These panels are driven by a single chip solution that allows end user products with narrower bezels to be created.

This year’s mobile display panels will include an array of new functions and features. Highlighted products include 2.2-, 2.4- and 3.0-inch OLED displays, 2.6-, 2.8- and 3.5-inch LTPS displays and a 2.2-inch IPS LCD display with a transflective setting. The company will also demonstrate a 2.0-inch module that is a mere 0.79 mm thick.

LG.Philips LCD is not only a leader in larger OLEDs but also in small models for handheld products. A 3.0-inch OLED panel for use in digital still cameras will be shown along with 2.2-, 2.4- and 3.0-inch versions well suited for a number of different applications.

Display Evolution
At its booth, LG.Philips LCD will have a special section demonstrating how much LCDs have improved in a short time. Visitors will be able to compare panels using conventional technology to panels that use the latest technology developed by LG.Philips LCD, including advancements in IPS, energy efficiency and picture improvement technologies.

A Career of Excellence Recognized
LG.Philips LCD has long regarded its success as a product of its highly talented employees. One such person, Chief Technology Officer In Jae Chung, will receive SID’s Special Recognition Award for his contributions to the display industry through advanced technologies leading to higher performance LCD applications and next generation displays. Dr. Chung will receive this award on May 21 in Beacon Ballroom A at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach.

LG.Philips LCD Develops the World’s First Full Color Flexible AMOLED Using a-Si Technology

LG.Philips LCD [NYSE: LPL, KRX: 034220], a leading innovator of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, announced today that it has developed the first full-color flexible active matrix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED) display that uses amorphous silicon (a-Si) technology. LG.Philips LCD developed this display in cooperation with Universal Display Corporation of the United States, which holds the original patents for Phosphorescent OLED (PHOLED) technology.

LG.Philips LCD’s 4-inch full-color flexible AMOLED display features 320 x 240 QVGA resolution and can reproduce 16.77 million colors. At an ultra thin 150 µm, this display is barely thicker than a human hair. It uses a stainless metal foil substrate to ensure durability and protection against heat, which improves the manufacturing process and enhances product stability.

“This display capitalizes on the strengths of OLED technology and its image quality is really something to behold,” said Hyunhe Ha, executive vice president and the head of the Small & Medium Displays Business Unit at LG.Philips LCD. “Although we are still in the initial stages with this technology, we expect to make some exciting advances in the near future. LG.Philips LCD is focused on customer-centered technology development to introduce products that customers want.”

OLED technology is recognized as an optimal technology for use in flexible displays. It allows LG.Philips LCD to develop a flexible display with improved durability and reliability while delivering full-color and high-resolution. Most importantly, using a-Si backplane technology allows LG.Philips LCD to use its existing TFT-LCD production line for these AMOLEDs, a major step toward demonstrating the commercial viability of such products. LG.Philips LCD is the first company to employ this technology.

LG.Philips LCD leads the industry in advanced flexible displays. In 2006 the company revealed a 14.1-inch monochrome E-paper display. This year it became the first company to introduce a color version in the same size.

LG.Philips LCD will unveil the full-color flexible AMOLED display at SID 2007 in Long Beach, California, on May 20.

Bright idea: new LEDs will dazzle handhelds, PC screens, TVs and more

Researchers next week will show off new technology that promises to make PC screens, handheld device readouts and televisions brighter, slimmer and less expensive.

UCLA researchers have recently achieved the highest lumens per watt ever recorded for a red phosphorescent LED or light-emitting diodes, using a new combination of plastic, or polymer, infused liquid - and they did it at half the current cost. The LEDs will be presented at the Society for Information Display 2007 conference in Long Beach, Calif., from May 20 through 25, according to UCLA materials science and engineering professor Yang Yang and his graduate researcher Jinsong Huang.

LEDs are generally measured in lumens per watt. Lumens, a measure of the perceived power of light, and watts, a standard measure of power, combine to define the optical efficiency of power - in other words, how bright a device is and how much power it consumes.

Current red LEDs generally score around 12 lumens per watt. Yang and Huang’s technology rates a record-breaking 18 lumens per watt, according to a university release.

In Yang and Huang’s new polymer light emitting diodes, the devices have a very simple single-layer structure, generated by a much cheaper solution process. The new LED, or more precisely PLED, developed by the two UCLA engineers uses a polymer powder and liquid mixture added to a previously top-secret material developed by Canon to create a paint-like product. The product is used to coat a layer of glass, and a charge is added. The end result is a slim single layer of glass with two electrodes.

The new technology, has been licensed by Canon, should be available to consumers in about three years, the release said. LEDs are fast becoming the lighting mechanism of choice in electronics, housewares and automobiles. Their small size, powerful light emission, reliability, low energy requirement and long lifespan make them the ideal product for many applications. Making them brighter and cheaper will only increase their usage.

Samsung CX971P LCD Monitor with MagicRotation

Samsung introduces the 19 inch LCD monitor CX971P in Korea, which is an update the currently available Samsung 971P.

The Samsung CX971P features an iF award winning design. The highlight is the monitor stand which lets you choose the height, angle and rotation of the screen. Specification highlights of the LCD panel are a 4000:1 contrast ratio and a 6ms response time.

Samsung is offering the CX971P in black and white.
Currently on the market is the Samsung 971P, which already features the MagicRotation feature, but has a lower performing panel with 1,500:1 contrast ratio.

Barco will be demonstrating the 56″ quad full high definition display at the National Association of Broadcasters starting 16 April 2007. The LC-5621’s large size and outstanding video quality make it an ideal display solution for studio backdrop applications and broadcast control rooms, where multiple video inputs need to be monitored. The adjustable color temperature setting enables users to maintain perfect color balance under all studio lighting conditions. For high-quality distribution of video sources, the LC series can be combined with Barco’s multiviewer product family or networked broadcast monitoring systems (NBMS).
